Do air purifiers help against viruses and bacteria?
While the most common bacteria’s diameter is between 0.5 and 7 microns, viruses are on average a hundred times smaller. The air purifier is not the same as an air purifier. The devices on the market differ in their functioning and, accordingly, remove pollutants and tiny, harmful particles such as pollen. Some models have drawbacks. Alternatively, you can use an air scrubber or ionizer. However, their mode of action is different, and caution is required for the latter.
An air purifier with HEPA filter: The most effective way of air purification
HEPA stands for High-Efficiency Particulate Air Filter (German: highly efficient particulate air filter). The filters consist of tight-meshed, layered mats made of glass fibres or cellulose. Unlike a sieve, where the mesh size remains the same, the different layers’ meshes are different tight.

An ionizer is a chemical air purifier. The device produces negatively charged ions that attract the positively charged pollutants in the air. Heavy molecules form that sink to the ground or stick to a metal plate in the device. Ionizers have no filters. Compared to air purifiers and air scrubbers, they are more compact and often cheaper.
Its major disadvantage is the formation of ozone by the ionization of oxygen in the
air. Ozone splits odour molecules and kills bacteria. However, if the concentration is too high, it irritates the mucous membranes and causes headaches. High-quality ionizers produce little ozone, but asthmatics and allergy sufferers should choose other devices for air purification.
